Britain's public sector spending deficit dropped to its lowest August total since 2007 after an increase in VAT revenues and a squeeze on local authority borrowing.
Environmental protesters have climbed on to a ship at a Kent port transporting diesel cars from Germany. Greenpeace said campaigners had boarded the ship at Sheerness in Kent and were preventing the unloading of the cars.

A supermarket in London is trialling a biometric payment system that uses the unique vein pattern in fingertips to pay for goods. Costcutter said it would consider rolling Fingopay out more widely if the test, at Brunel University, was successful.
